Our Sustainability Journey

While growing our business is a given, we are equally committed to caring for the environment and the people we work with. We have set clear sustainability goals that focus on four key pillars: the environment, people, procurement, and governance.

We will continue to adapt our efforts to meet these goals, aiming to build a stronger, more sustainable business, protect the planet, and support our people. Our commitment to sustainability drives us to reduce our environmental impact and promote greener practices throughout our operations.

Reducing Our Environmental Impact

At Markono, sustainability is central to how we operate. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy, and minimising waste through eco-friendly practices. By consolidating our processes, embracing advanced technologies, and adopting sustainable materials, we strive to ensure that our business remains efficient and environmentally responsible.

Energy Management

Our state-of-the-art M-Cube facility exemplifies our commitment to green technology. It has earned the BCA Green Mark Award (Gold) for its sustainability practices, which include energy-efficient LED lighting, appliances with a 3-tick rating under Singapore’s Tick Rating, and roof-mounted solar panels that supply 10% of our total energy needs. Additionally, our building is designed to maximise natural light, further reducing energy consumption with T5 light tubes.

Digitalisation and Automation

Recognising the environmental impact of the printing industry, we have embraced digitalisation and automation to reduce our energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Key technologies, such as our Robotic Palletiser, Automated Storage & Retrieval System, and Automated Guided Vehicles, streamline operations and improve efficiency. Our proprietary e-Motion portal also allows customers to make smarter, faster print decisions from anywhere, minimising waste and excess production.

Reduced Waste

Our print-on-demand model allows us to eliminate the need for excess inventory, reducing the waste generated from obsolete products. By producing only what is required, we significantly cut down on material usage and avoid the environmental impact associated with pulping outdated stock.

Waste Management

We are committed to using recyclable and eco-friendly materials in all our products. From papers to inks, our focus on sustainable materials plays a vital role in reducing our overall environmental impact. These efforts ensure that we continue to uphold the highest standards of sustainability throughout our operations.

Our Commitment to Safety, Diversity, and Development

We are dedicated to creating a workplace where every employee feels valued, safe, and motivated. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures equal opportunities for all, regardless of age, gender, race, or other personal characteristics.

Employee Safety and Total Well-Being

At Markono, employee safety is a top priority. We proactively work to prevent injuries, reduce risks, and build a resilient workforce. By 2025, we aim to ensure 100% of our employees are trained in health and safety, with a goal of zero workplace injuries.

Diversity and Inclusion

We cultivate a work culture that champions equal opportunities and fosters an environment free from discrimination, where everyone can thrive.

People Engagement and Talent Development

By investing in our people, we equip them with the skills they need to grow, strengthening the foundation of our future. At Markono, every employee has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to our collective success.

Responsible Sourcing for Sustainability

We recognise that responsible procurement is essential for achieving sustainability. We engage with our suppliers to ensure environmentally-friendly practices are adopted throughout the supply chain. Our suppliers are expected to respect basic human rights and uphold high ethical standards along every part of the value chain.

Integrity at the Core of Our Business

Our commitment to governance is built on integrity and transparency. We believe that sustainable success can only be achieved through ethical business practices. To this end, we actively prevent, deter, and detect fraud, bribery, and other corrupt practices. We enforce high standards of accountability among all employees and suppliers.

Corporate Governance

(Anti-Corruption Policy)

We are committed to conducting business with integrity and transparency.

Our zero-tolerance approach to bribery and corruption applies to all employees and operations, both locally and globally:

  1. We strictly prohibit offering, giving, or accepting anything of value to gain an improper advantage.
  2. We encourage the reporting of any suspicious activities, and we ensure that those who come forward are protected from retaliation.

Our policy is regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness, and we maintain strict record-keeping practices for all gifts, entertainment, and related expenses.

At Markono, ethical business conduct is at the core of everything we do.

Commitment and Achievements

At Markono, we demonstrate our dedication to sustainability through efforts such as achieving ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System and FSC Chain of Custody certification.

In recent years, we have earned recognition for our sustainability practices, including the Green Mark Gold Award in 2022, the LowCarbonSG Logo in 2023, and re-certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Most recently, in 2024, we were awarded a prestigious Platinum Medal in the EcoVadis assessment.
